WINANT CLAYTON VOLUNTEERS Profile

Winant Clayton Volunteers began in 1948 when a group of Americans came to the United Kingdom, specifically East London, to do voluntary social work. In 1959 an invitation was extended to a group from the UK to do the same on the East Coast of the USA. The program is named in memory of John Winant, an ambassador during World War Two, and his good friend the Reverend “Tubby” Clayton, founder of Toc H and former vicar of All Hallows-by-the-Tower

WHAT WORK DO VOLUNTEERS DO?
Placements vary from year to year but the work done by volunteers is similar. Some of the projects we work with are:
 psychiatric rehabilitation centres
 day centres for homeless and former drug and alcohol users
 urban and rural playschemes
 HIV and AIDS projects
While working on such projects you may be doing anything from visiting shut-ins to sweeping sitting rooms in day centres to fixing meals for homeless. Some of the situations are very challenging but you do get support from your supervisor on your placement and the organisation as well as from your fellow volunteers.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Volunteers finance their return air-fare and insurance; this was £460 in 2005. Whilst working, volunteers receive free food and accommodation and in 2005 about $800 pocket money over the eight week period. Volunteers finance their travel after their placement. For those on a budget the US board will provide a hospitality list of past Winants and friends of the Association in all parts of the country who welcome having Claytons to stay. It is recommended that volunteers take a MINIMUM of £800 to cover incidental expenses and the cost of their travel in the USA.
