SAPERE is acknowledged as the official UK body by ICPIC (International Council for Philosophical Inquiry with Children) and it provides the only accredited P4C courses in the UK.We have cultivated a network of teachers and others working with young people.
What is ‘Philosophical Enquiry?’
Philosophy for Communities or 'P4C' is a method of teaching and learning that can be used with any age, any ability, and in any subject. It involves the art of philosophising - the many skills of asking and responding to important and thoughtful questions - rather than the academic study of Philosophy itself. It has been developed over 30 years from the work of Matthew Lipman in Philosophy for Children, and is now practised in more than 60 countries worldwide. It focuses on developing thinking skills, quality dialogue, pupils' values and emotions within a group or 'community of enquiry'.
SAPERE across the UK Examples of current projects:
N-RAIS (Northumberland’s Raising Aspirations in Society) has a thinking skills project, including P4C, with funding of £1.7million over 3 years. A team of 7 teaching and learning consultants, one office manager and 2 Directors have been in post from April 2003, to work alongside the schools and communities of some of Northumberland’s most deprived areas.
Steve Trickey, an Educational Psychologist, has conducted extensive research into the effects of P4C in 100 Primary Schools in Clackmannanshire over the past two years. Amongst many other results, Steve’s research showed that: there were significant gains in verbal and non-verbal reasoning, teachers doubled their use of open-ended questions, there were improvements in listening, communication, behaviour, questioning, reasoning, reading and understanding, pupil ‘talk time’ increased from 41% to 66% and there was an average of a 6.5 point gain in IQ scores (reflected in CAT scores).
In Cumbria there is a cluster of schools working together on P4C under the guidance of Barrow Community Learning Partnership who have been collaborating with Age Concern on an ‘Intergenerational Project’ that brings young and older people together for philosophical enquiry. 70 older volunteers aged 55-90 have been involved in 15 local schools and colleges.
SAPERE is now running ‘Philosophy for Global Citizenship’ courses across the UK. There are two projects; the first funded by Oxfam for representatives of development education to explore the links between global citizenship and P4C. The second project, “Food and Freedom” is funded by DfID and is a collaborative project with Living Earth that provides free training for teachers in P4C in five LEAs with an emphasis on Global Citizenship with links and resources from Ghana.
10 students (Years 8-10) from Kingsbrook School in our Northamptonshire network recently joined their teachers on a SAPERE Level 1 Course. The students involved have spent two years developing their P4C skills. They have a P4C Committee, run regular enquiries with feeder primary schools, have demonstrated P4C to members of the DfES Citizenship Team, and a “Thinking Citizens” conference in Oxford, and hold their own Philosophy Club meetings each week. They are now writing their own P4C Handbook for peer education.
