Ripon Community House, Centre for Ripon's Voluntary Services Profile
The Community House building was formally an old hospital which has stood empty for nearly 25 years. It was in a terrible state and lots of structural work had to be done. To bring the building into the 21st century it had to be fully rewired and replumbed, bringing in internet connection as well. The local community has given a tremendous amount of money to the project to get it to the point of near completion, but there is still a great need for funds to finish and maintain the project.
Community House will bring together all of the voluntary and charity organisations in the local area, giving people the chance to come to Community House for help, advice and support.
When we went to visit the project recently we were very impressed. We were amazed how they had managed to restore and refurbish this old derelict building, and since the building work started in April they have achieved so much. We have been fortunate to see the building near completion, with the ground floor only a few weeks from being signed off. The first floor was a different matter, with paint peeling off the walls, large cracks in the ceiling, and a huge amount sorting out to be done. Obviously to get the building up to spec there needs to be new electrics and internet connections wired in, plus heating and double glazing. Unbelievably every panel of double glazing that was to be mounted onto the original sash windows had to be individually made as each window was a slightly different size. What a huge task.
The ground floor was so amazing once they had decorated and fixed in the electrics. The whole building is fully accessible to the disabled and wheel chair bound, which will enable all people to come to the Community House for support or just a chat. There is a complete children’s wing where the toy library will be based and where parents can come for family support. The planning and thought that has gone into the build is beyond belief, even down to having a sensory garden for the mentally handicapped, and a children’s play area with a buggy shelter.
Stuart Martin explained to us how they need £50,000 to complete the building work and furnish the house. The problem that they have is that if they do not secure the money quite quickly the builders may have to leave the site when it is just so close to being completed. This would then cost more money to get the builders back on site.
From a Riponians’ viewpoint, as well as a Ripon business, I must admit that I knew very little about what the project was all about and what a difference the building will make to Ripon. I had heard about various fundraising events for Community House but feel that if the Ripon people get together for one last fundraising push then the project will get completed on time and be able to start housing the offices for the various charitable organisations in Ripon. One misconception that I had was that it was a council run venture, but it has all been done by the Ripon Council for Voluntary Service.
