Tracing its foundation from the 1840s, The Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI) is the world's longest established scholarly association dedicated to anthropology (the study of humankind) in the broadest sense. It exists to support all those with an interest in anthropology, whether as academics, students or members of the public. It has a particular commitment to promoting the public understanding of anthropology and its contribution to social and political issues. The RAI publishes journals (Anthropology Today and the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute), contributes to the Anthropology Library at the British Museum (launching the Anthropological Index On-line in 1997), holds important film, photo and manuscript collections, gives awards for outstanding scholarship, organises lectures, and an international film festival, and manages a number of trust funds for research.
