Guy's and St Thomas' Charity Profile
Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity supports the NHS in Lambeth and Southwark by awarding new service and innovation healthcare grants as well as funding excellence in research. The Charity awards grants that will impact on the future delivery of services, enable improvements to the healthcare environment and support staff development. Organisations that are eligible for funding are Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Lambeth and Southwark Primary Care Trusts and South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. Other institutions can apply for research grants in partnerships with the beneficiary Trusts.
Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity awards around £12 million worth of grants to its beneficiary Trusts in Lambeth and Southwark during the financial year. Achievements include the opening of The Evelina Children’s Hospital at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust which was funded with a grant of £50 million from the Charity and has also benefited from funds raised by The Evelina Children’s Hospital Appeal. The Charity developed a new grants strategy in February 2005 which includes a major research and development infrastructure fund. A full list of grants awarded can be accessed via the website at www.gsttcharity.org.uk/resources
The Charity’s New Services and Innovations (NSI) grants programme supports both small (under £20,000) and large (between £20,000 and £1 million) projects under the following five themes: staff benefits and development; clinical and service innovation; buildings and the environment; patient and user involvement; art and healthcare.
The Charity has developed a clearly defined grant making strategy reflecting NHS priorities including a significant commitment to augmenting the local research infrastructure.
The Charity is developing its estates to provide greater facilities for staff and patients.
The long-term estate strategy is to provide high quality staff accommodation in sites close to the major hospitals at Guy’s and St Thomas’.
The Charity has a reserve of £13.7 million to support the strategic development of Cancer services in the local NHS led by Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
£10.3 million remains set aside for the Modernisation Initiative which aims to develop major improvements to the way kidney, stroke and sexual health services are delivered.
It has also allocated £3.6 million to the Face initiative to improve the hospital environment and the patient experience.
The Charity manages its Special Purpose Funds with the advice of fundholders. The Charity's strategy is to ask fundholders to apply these funds over a three year period unless particular longer term needs have been identified.
The Charity is committed to supporting improvements to the environment through art. It manages a £5.5 million art collection and allocates significant resources to a diverse range of art and heritage projects each year.

The Charity has the following general aims:
To manage the Charity's endowment funds to generate an investment return to provide long-term ongoing support to the NHS in Lambeth and Southwark, primarily at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust;
To carry out fundraising that will support identified needs at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, focusing on equipping the new Evelina Children's Hospital until spring 2006;
To make grants that promote innovation and new services and to fund excellence in research at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and related organisations;
Through the management and development of its estates the Charity aims to meet the ongoing needs of the beneficiary Trusts, especially through the provision of keyworker and similar accommodation;
To promote the healing environment through maintaining and commissioning artworks and a performing arts programme, primarily at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
To manage Special Purpose Funds which are held by the Trustees for special purposes, e.g. cancer or for a particular hospital ward.
The Charity’s original endowments came from Edward VI, who re-established St Thomas’ Hospital in 1553 after it had been closed by his father because of its religious associations during the Reformation.
Two centuries later in 1721, a bible seller, MP and governor of St Thomas’, Thomas Guy, funded the building of Guy’s Hospital. Guy died before the building was complete but left one third of his estate to the hospital.
As voluntary hospitals, Guy’s and St Thomas’ relied on donations. When the NHS was created in 1948, health services were funded by the Government, but charitable donations continued to support the work of the hospital. These donations were ultimately managed by the separate Special Trustees of Guy’s Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital.
In 1993 the two hospitals merged under one NHS Trust and subsequently the two separate charitable funds were joined to form Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charitable Foundation. When Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital Trust achieved Foundation Trust status in 2004, the Trustees decided to change the name to Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity in January 2005.
