The Shannon Trust has developed and now promotes and supports a scheme for helping prisoners who cannot read. Each student is paired up with a fellow inmate as a mentor, who gives a 20 minute daily individual lesson, using a manual called Toe By Toe.
The Scheme is now operating in some form across the majority of the prison estate.
