Al Kalima is the inspiration of Arab author Mazhar Mallouhi, who has been writing novels in Arabic for the last forty years, and his wife Christine. Through their network of Arab Muslim friends it became clear that many of them wanted to understand the teaching of the Bible, but there was very little published in Arabic that was freely available.
Seeking to address this need, Al Kalima was born in 1998 with the publication of a cpmmentary on the Gospel of Luke, "An Eastern Reading of the Gospel of Luke". This book was warmly received by Arab readers and has sold over 50,000 copies over many reprints.
The charity ws registered in the UK in 1999 to administer the publishing and distribution work based in Beirut. Since then Al Kalima has built up a small catalogues of books in print.
Five of these are Christian novels by Mazhar Mallouhi and three are biblical commentaries on Luke, Genesis and John. The last of these appeared in 2004 and was hailed as one of the books of the year by an Arab publishers' journal.
Christine Mallouhi is a published author in English, with two books currently in print, "Waging Peace on Islam", and "Miniskirts, Mothers and Muslims". The Mallouhis were recently featured on an Al Jazeera TV documentary.
