ACIE Association of Charity Independent Examiners Profile
Independent examiners are responsible for scrutinising charity accounts below the level where a full audit is required. In general this covers charities up to £250,000 income in England and Wales, and up to £100,000 income in Scotland (although both thresholds are likely to rise to £500,000 during 2006).
In both regimes an independent examiner is defined as an independent person who is reasonably believed by the charity trustees to have the requisite ability and practical experience to carry out a competent examination of the accounts. It is estimated that up to 30,000 people may be acting as independent examiners, and ACIE seeks to provide support, training, and a professional qualification. ACIE can also provide lists of full members for charities seeking an independent examiner.
