More children of 11 and 12 are binge drinking. That is "drinking to get drunk". This is very dangerous and children are dying from it. Over the past two years years Alcohelp has been putting together a programme for year six children (10-11 yo) telling of these dangers. It is the Alcohelp Alcohol Awareness Programme. All action is projected onto a screen or interactive white board. There are experiments about how alcohol affects your brain and images that show what happens if you binge drink. We have videos that teach children how to say "No" to alcohol and what to do if somebody who's been drinking offers them a ride. We also use "impairment goggles" which give the effect of being drunk! We have tried this out at Felsted Primary School and they think it so important that is now part of their curriculum. We have applied for a grant so we can take it to all Essex primary schools within three years and nationally within six years...we hope we'll be successful !
