VESL: Volunteer in Sri Lanka! Profile
Each year VESL recruits volunteers to run English summer schools for school children in Sri Lanka. VESL also sends out volunteers to run specialist teacher training workshops for English teachers across the country.
Unlike many organisations that send volunteers overseas, VESL is a charity. Although volunteers are asked to contribute towards the costs of their placements, we try to ensure this contribution is kept to a minimum.
Our aim is to set up and run well-structured, well-supported and worthwhile placements in the neediest Singhalese, Tamil and Muslim communities. We also maintain an education fund. In the past we have paid the salaries of Sri Lankan English teachers and contributed towards educational resources for the most deprived communities in the country.
About the summer programme:
Our projects run in July and August and are based in the North, East, South and Central provinces of Sri Lanka, and cover all of Sri Lankas ethnic communities. Some schools are in the Hill country in the centre of the island, some are near Jaffna in the north-east, and some are in coastal areas.
VESL volunteers work in groups of two or more to run four or five-week summer English programmes. Volunteers teach from Monday to Friday for about 3 to 5 hours a day. Weekends are free.
After the project is completed volunteers are free to travel the country for as long as they wish.
About yourself:
Are you:
Over 18 years old? VESL has no upper age limit.
Up for a challenge? Most of our projects are very rural; some are in communities without running water and electricity. Volunteers will in most cases be living with members of the local community, in their houses. Adaptability and an ability to be culturally sensitive are essential.
Available for the duration of the project? You must be available from mid-July to mid-August. Please contact us if you want more specific information about the dates of the programme. You will also need to be available for a training weekend in the UK, which is likely to be held in June.
Available on March 24 or 25 for a selection day in London or available on April 1 or 2 for a selection day in Edinburgh?
Who are we looking for?:
Anyone who wants to volunteer and feels they have something to contribute.
An interest in Sri Lanka and its history would be an asset.
Experience of working with children and/or teaching would be helpful.
Experience of overseas travel would also be useful.
However, enthusiasm, adaptability and sensitivity are the top attributes we will be looking for in any volunteer.
About your safety:
All our staff are experienced in living and working in Sri Lanka. We have back-up and support staff available in Sri Lanka throughout the programme.
We vet and risk-assess all our projects thoroughly. We also take advice directly from the Foreign and Commonwealth office on the safety of the areas in which we work.
VESL takes out comprehensive insurance for all volunteers.
About your contribution:
As VESL is a charity run largely by volunteers, you will have to contribute towards the cost of the placement. We expect volunteers to contribute £750 towards the cost of their trip.
The contribution covers the cost of setting up and running the project, a pre-departure induction session, an in-country briefing session on arrival, transport to your project, comprehensive insurance, food, accommodation, visas and thorough in-country back-up and support. We do not cover the cost of flying to and from Sri Lanka.
It is important to us that we are as transparent as we can be about how your money is spent. You can see exactly how these costs break down on our website (www.vesl.org/costs).
We are happy to give advice on ways to fundraise this amount. VESL is a charity and is not run for profit. Your contribution is spent on the costs of your trip and on fulfilling the organisations charitable objectives.
