MHA operates throughout Britain, providing Care Homes, housing and support services, with a particular emphasis on the quality and meaning of life for older people. The organisation supports more than 6,500 older people in residential and nursing care homes, specialist dementia care homes, sheltered housing schemes and community projects. MHA employs 3,500 staff and enjoys the support and dedication of more than 5,000 volunteers.
We are well established, financially secure and passionate to improve and extend our services. Major growth and capital investment are underway, with annual income rising to exceed £60 million in 2005/6. MHA is well placed to meet the changing needs of the UK’s growing and increasingly diverse older population. For more than a decade, the organisation has pioneered highly effective, person-centred care and support. MHA is respected in the sector and appreciated by the older people we serve. In its report Forget me Not: mental health services for older people, the Audit Commission praised the organisation for its approach to care, particularly for people with dementia.
CARE HOMES
• MHA is one of the largest providers of residential care for older people in the UK, with 60 homes caring for over 2,500 people.
• We have 22 care homes providing specialist dementia care
• We have 16 care homes providing nursing care.
• We were one of the first to design purpose built homes for older people.
• We were one of the first charities to provide private rooms for all residents.
• We continue to innovate, seeking to exceed expectations in terms of space, technology, en-suite and communal facilities
• The average age of residents is almost 90.
HOUSING
• MHA has developed 30 housing schemes providing self contained apartments which facilitate independent living for over 1,000 people
• Most schemes consist of between 20 and 40 apartments with an on-site Scheme Manager, call system and communal facilities.
• Apartments have traditionally been for rent but we now also provide retirement housing for sale.
• We continue to innovate, providing on-site care, to meet individual needs for people with dementia and couples, so they are able to remain living together
COMMUNITY SERVICES
• We currently have more than 40 Live at Home schemes nationwide, led by dedicated volunteers.
• Schemes support independent living and social inclusion for older people who may have become isolated from their local communities.
• Services include befriending, lunch clubs, trips, training and social activities
• Community services are being developed for older people with dementia living in their own home.
