Saint Stephen Charitable Trust Profile
The Saint Stephen Charitable Trust is dedicated to the restoration of churches made redundant by the Church of England, and to ensure they remain available for Christian worship.
To date, the trust has purchased two such churches: the first, the former Saint Osmund church in Poole, Dorset, is a magnificent Grade II* listed building. The church has successfully reopened, a new priest has been assigned, and services are conducted on a regular basis (www.OrthodoxPoole.org.uk). The second, another spectacular, Grade II listed building, is located in Bradford. We expect to take possession in early 2006.
Both these churches and others we hope to save, in addition to offering a place of solace and spiritual support to those in need, also provide local community facilities for such activities as daycare, clubs for the elderly, adult education, etc., etc.
The churches we save are of national architectural importance and are often loved and cherished landmarks of the local community. Indeed, Saint Osmund was one of, if not the favourite of John Betjeman.
Unfortunately, in addition to routine maintenance and upkeep, these churches require costly restoration. At Saint Osmund, repairs are estimated at over 300,000 pounds.
Please help save these churches to keep them not only for their historical value, but also in the service of God.
