Making it Better - the Daniel Courtney Trust, was set up as a lasting memory and tribute to Daniel Courtney, an incredibly special little boy who touched the lives of so many people with his charm, personality and courage. Born with Microvillous Atrophy, an extremely rare genetic disorder of the bowel, Daniel fought bravely for sixteen and a half months for his chance of life. He was totally dependent on TPN (intravenous feeding) and spent his entire life in hospital, where he courageously overcame many obstacles, including numerous infections, ascites, oesophageal varices, an intracranial haemorrhage and a craniotomy. Daniel survived an initial isolated liver transplant in November 2004, but very sadly lost his battle for life in April 2005 due to complications arising from a second transplant - a combined liver and small bowel. The expertise, support and devotion of those at Great Ormond Street Hospital, Birmingham Children's Hospital and Edward House made a huge difference to Daniel and his family.
The aim of Daniel's Trust is three-fold:
1. To raise money to help make the lives of patients and their families better by providing funding, equipment and facilities for primarily, but not exclusively, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Birmingham Children's Hospital and Edward House.
2. To increase public awareness of combined liver-bowel transplantation and the importance of organ donation.
3. To raise money to support research into Microvillous Atrophy and to ensure that all research is written up for publication and enters the public domain.
