Orphaids - helping orphans of AIDS victims in Ecuador and Africa. Profile

Orphaids was created to place AIDS orphans in families and to construct new family units. Often, orphans are abandoned by their extended family because they are believed to be contagious. They then become street children or enter the sex industry where they themselves contract the virus. Orphaids is about breaking that cycle.

Orphaids initially provided a purpose-built site in Ecuador, houseparents for the orphans and palliative care for parents in the terminal stages of their illness. However, as we have worked to educate people about HIV/AIDS the culture is gradually changing.

Therefore, even though the Orphaids site continues to operate and expand, our preference now is to keep and support orphans within their own communities, preferrably within their extended family and continue to dispel the myths and stigma attached to HIV/AIDS.
