In 2004 the 2 schools in The Gambia,West Africa, were in serious need of support. The AMGM Secondary School had 4 unfinished classrooms which it was not able to use as they had not been roofed. The school roll was increasing and the numbers of students in the classrooms were getting towards 50 per room - large secondary school students aged up to 20 years. The roof would cost about £3000.00 to complete.
The AMGM Nursery School was housed in an old church hall - the church itself had moved to new premises but there was nowhere for the nursery to be housed in the newly built church. The existing church hall was in very poor condition - no water for the flush toilets, corners of the building crumbling allowing feral cats to enter and mark out their territory, the building was situated next to the local market and beside an open sewer. A new school was desperately needed to house the 120 pupils. The cost would be about £25,000 to build a 6 classroomed school with electricity - lights and fans, water in each classroom and two separate toilet blocks.
An offer was made of an interest free loan to cover the cost of these 2 projects. The AMGMS Trust was founded to raise the funds to repay the loan and to continue to support the two schools with educational materials and equipment.
