The Nightingale Macmillan Unit in London Road Derby is a Specialist Palliative Care Unit caring for terminally ill patients who, in the majority of cases have cancer. The "Friends of the Nightingale" was formed in 1990 with two main objectives (1) to raise public awareness through both advertising and visiting groups and organisations to advise on the caring service that is given to the patients by both the professionals and the volunteers in the Unit. (2) The "Friends" endeavour to raise funds in order that we are able to purchase additional equipment and services to the benefit of the patients in the Unit. Our fundraising is varied in that, firstly we have our own logo items which we sell via our display cabinet in the Unit or at various table tops that we have throughout the year. We also rely on individuals and organisations donating items or their services on which we can raise funds or organise fundraising events based on the donated services. These areas might involve fairs, slide shows, concerts, auctions, etc. Whether it be donated items or services this enables us to reach our fundraising targets sooner than otherwise would be the case. It is the management of the Nightingale Macmillan Unit who request the areas that they consider would best benefit the patients and their carers and we has the "Friends" take these requests and discuss in Committee and invariably the requests are accepted and then this becomes our current project.
