Waterloo Green Trust Profile
The Waterloo Green Trust (WGT) is a small, charitable community organisation based in Waterloo. We manage the Waterloo Millennium Green and work closely in partnership with local communities and relevant stakeholders to deliver a number of projects which enhance, improve and sustain the natural environment in North Lambeth.
We were established in 2000 as The Waterloo Community Charity, becoming The Waterloo Green Trust in 2003. We are a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee.
WGT was first conceived in 1997, and constituted in 2000 as direct response to the needs of local people for an improved natural environment. It has led the transformation of a run down open space in North Lambeth into the Waterloo Millennium Green, the first new park in Lambeth for 20 years. WGT secured a 999 year lease for this site in 2000. The site is now managed as a community green space and provides a focus for education, recreation and leisure for thousands of users per year.
The main activites of WGT have developed and are now to work in partnership with local communities and relevant stakeholders to deliver a number of projects which enhance, improve and sustain the natural environment in North Lambeth. These include:
Ø 'My Green Waterloo' developing the quality of the Waterloo Millenium Green as a community managed green space and other public green space sites;
Ø 'Space and Inclusion' managing and delivering educational projects and events on the Waterloo Millenium Green, in schools and other sites in North Lambeth: to educate, involve and increase local people's environmental skills, knowledge and 'sense of ownership' of green spaces. These include gardening clubs, school projects, corporate team challenges and events on the Waterloo Millennium Green;
Ø 'Space for All' managing the strategic progression of the renewal, community management and sustainability of green space sites in North Lambeth: to ensure public green space management is co-ordinated, involves local communities and is effective. This includes co-ordinating the Waterloo Open Space Partnership, managing specific open space projects such as work on Hatfields Gardens and Ufford Street Recreation Ground;
Ø 'Greener and Safer' managing the renewal of public green space projects on social housing estates in North Lambeth: to improve the quality of the local environment for disadvantaged communities. This includes regneration work and capacity building with tenants and residents associations on Tanswell and Briant Estates;
Ø 'Transforming Waterloo' managing the renewal of high profile public green space projects in North Lambeth: representing and promoting the views and interests of local communities and improving the quality of the local environment for disadvantaged communities. This includes involvement in the Jubilee Gardens and Emma Cons Gardens steering groups;
WGT specifically targets people living in disadvantaged communities in its work, including young people and those experiencing homelessness and works in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders to enhance people’s quality of life to ensure that in a densely populated area there is ‘space for all’.
