The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths Profile
Over 300 babies die suddenly and inexplicably every year in the UK. Cot death (or SIDS) kills more babies than meningitis, all forms of cancer and accidents put together. FSID is the UK’s leading baby charity working to prevent sudden infant death and promote baby health. FSID funds vital research into the causes of SIDS (over £9 million to date), supports families who have been devastated by cot death and promotes lifesaving baby safety advice to parents, carers and professionals
FSID helped launch the Reduce the Risk campaign which has slashed the UK cot death rate by nearly 75% since its launch in 1991 and which has been hailed as one of the most successful public health campaigns ever. It is estimated that 14,000 lives may have been saved as a result of our advice. Yet we need to continue our lifesaving work, so that every single one of the 700,000 babies born every year in the UK has the chance of a lifetime.
FSID offers: a Helpline, 020 7233 2090, for parents, carers and health professionals; a wide range of reduce the risk and baby safety publications and resources; a network of trained befrienders to support bereaved families; a phone card to enable bereaved parents to call our Helpline free of charge; the Care of Next Infant (CONI) Scheme, with the NHS, to support bereaved families when they have subsequent babies.
