NACOA is a national charity, based in Bristol, founded in 1990 to address the problems of children growing up in families where one or both parents suffer from alcoholism or a similar addictive problem. This includes children of alcoholics of all ages, many of whose problems only become apparent in adulthood.
NACOA has the following aims:
To offer information, advice and support to children of alcoholics
To reach professionals who work with children of alcoholics
To raise the profile of children of alcoholics in the public consciousness
To promote research into the phenomenon of children of alcoholics
Our main activities include:
1. Free, confidential telephone helpline providing information advice and support for children of alcoholics and people concerned for their welfare.
2. Free confidential email and letter service providing information, advice and support for children of alcoholics and people concerned for their welfare.
2. Website providing information and advice, including personal experiences, training materials, factual and resource information, research and links to other organisations.
3. Telephone helpline providing information, advice and support for professionals working with children of alcoholics.
4. Email and letter service providing information and advice for professionals.
5. Information packs specific to callers using NACOA UK Resource Database listing local and national organisations and agencies relevant to children of alcoholics.
6. Publications for children of alcoholics, people concerned for their welfare and professionals.
7. Foundation and ongoing training programmes for volunteers and professionals from other agencies.
8. Comprehensive volunteering opportunities programme.
9. Research into (1) the particular problems faced by those who grow up with parental alcoholism and (2) the prevention of alcoholism developing in this vulnerable group of children.
11. Membership scheme for individuals and organisations, including a quarterly newsletter.
12. Annual lectures: David Stafford Memorial, AGM and Volunteers Awards Lectures
