Sheffield Futures Profile
Sheffield Futures is an independent charity formed in 2002 by combining Sheffield Careers Guidance Services with Sheffield City Council’s Youth Service. It employs around 500 people and deals with a budget in excess of £10 million.
Sheffield Futures serves three main groups – young people, adults and employers, with around 80% of our resources devoted to helping young people.
Sheffield Futures spearheads the delivery of the government’s Connexions service in Sheffield. Connexions is the information, advice and support service for 13-19 year-olds. This involves a close partnership between the wide range of bodies that support young people, including schools and colleges, social services, health services, voluntary organisations and other agencies.
Sheffield Futures also operates New Futures, the careers support, advice and guidance service for adults.
Work with young people in the community
Sheffield Futures provides constructive youth activities in all areas of Sheffield. This includes
• Youth centres, where young people can meet in a safe and welcoming environment
• Detached youth work on the streets and other public places, for young people who do not wish to access youth centres
• Project work – programmes responding to issues affecting young people or targeting a particular group.
Sheffield Futures also provides targeted interventions for those at risk of social disengagement and continued support to those not in education, employment or training.
Work in schools and colleges
Sheffield Futures provides information, advice and guidance to school and college students on learning and careers choices. Our Connexions personal advisers provide more intensive support to those who need it. We support training to develop teachers’ knowledge and skills.
Work with adults and employers
The New Futures arm of Sheffield Futures provides careers guidance and support with finding a job to those over 20 years old. New Futures also provides workforce development activities for adults and employers.
