Storybook Dads Profile

About 150,000 children each year, suffer the imprisonment of a parent. There is little support for them and many experience feelings of abandonment, shame and low self-esteem often resulting in poor performance at school and delinquency. Prisoners children are 3 times more prone to significant mental health problems than their peers.

At Storybook Dads, we help to reduce the pain of separation by enabling the parent to record stories and messages for their child. The stories are edited by specially trained prisoners who can add sound fx and music and remove any mistakes and background noises. The finished story is put onto a CD or DVD and sent to the child. The discs give comfort to the children who can hear their parents voice wheneve they need to and helps them to develop an interest in stories and books which in turn helps with literacy skills. For the parent, reading to their child and helping with their literacy skills improves their self-esteem and their perceived value as a parent.

About 50% of prisoners lose contact with their families during their sentence and those that do so are 6 times more likely to re-offend. For many families the CDs/DVDs are a lifeline - helping to heal family rifts and repairing bonds that otherwise may have been broken.

Based in Dartmoor Prison, Storybook Dads has now rolled the scheme out to over 70 UK prisons and we're still growing! As well as the story discs, we also hold various workshops which give prisoners and their kids the opportunity to engage in reading and imagination. In 2008, over 13,600 beneficiaries were reached.

We currently employ 10 prisoners at our editing suite within Dartmoor and many more are employed throughout the schemes in other UK prisons. Prisoner/editors learn valuable new skills and can gain an OCN in sound and audio production. In 2009 we have take the pioneering step of employing one of the editors upon his release from Dartmoor.
